Deadline to Apply for Summer Company Program is Approaching
Students across Waterloo Region seeking entrepreneurship experience need to apply soon to take advantage of the Ontario’s Summer Company program

Kitchener, ON – Ontario’s Summer Company program application deadline is May 23, 2014. The Waterloo Region Small Business Centre is administering the Summer Company program for local high school, college, and university students. The program guides students through the process of launching their own business throughout their summer vacation and offers the rewarding experience of being an entrepreneur. Small Business Enterprise Centre’s across Ontario provide students age 15 to 29 with hands-on coaching, mentoring and up to $3,000 to help them launch successful businesses over their summer break through Ontario’s Summer Company program.
As part of the Youth Jobs Strategy announced in Ontario’s 2013 Budget, 100 new spaces would be added to Summer Company this year, bringing the number of openings to 600. The number of spaces will increase again this year and in 2015. The Youth Jobs Strategy is part of the government’s plan to help Ontario’s young people succeed and build a prosperous and fair province.
- About 4,400 students have participated in Summer Company since 2001.
- Successful businesses that started as Summer Companies include Real Tech, Vidyard and Scarfone Photography.
- Last year, 89 per cent of participants said they planned to continue running their businesses part-time during school or again this summer.
- Announced in Ontario’s 2013 Budget, the Youth Jobs Strategy would be supported by a total investment of $295 million over two years, and would create 30,000 new employment opportunities.
